Milk Fluoridation
Milk was first used as a vehicle for fluoride in the UK in 1993, in St Helens, Merseyside. The successful implementation of this pilot scheme generated considerable interest and led to the development of the UK programme, currently involving over 42,000 children aged 3 - 11 in 14 local authority districts, predominately situated in the northwest of England.
The use of established school milk systems has been a key factor in the success of the programme. Another has been the reconfiguration of existing resources within Primary Care Trusts to manage the schemes.
Programmes have also been established in a number of other countries including the Russian Federation, Chile and Thailand, in addition to Bulgaria where the very first community based scheme was established, back in 1988. These have demonstrated that milk can provide an alternative vehicle for the delivery of fluoride, particularly in areas where it has not been possible to introduce water or salt fluoridation.
